what to send when you can’t be there

The gift is not the flower. It is the evidence that you thought about it on a day you were not there.

handmade pipe-cleaner flower mounted on a gift card, finished with a ribbon bow

One flower, one card, ₹399, posted anywhere in India. That is the whole object, and the reason it works is that it is not trying to be enough.

There are days you cannot get to — a birthday in another city, a funeral you found out about too late, a friend’s first day at something, an argument that needs a gesture rather than another message. A large gift on those days can read as an attempt to buy your way out of not being there. A small deliberate one does not.

The gift is not the flower

It is the evidence that you thought about it on a day you were somewhere else. That is the whole content of the transaction, and it is why the card matters more than the stem.

Which is also why a message typed into a checkout box beats a printed greeting. Write the actual sentence. It goes on the card in the box.

Four times it is the right thing to send

  • An apology. Flowers that die in five days are a strange thing to apologise with. This one is still there in a month, which is either the point or a risk, depending on the apology.
  • A congratulations. A new job, an exam passed, a first flat. Small enough that they are not obliged to reciprocate.
  • Thinking of you. No occasion at all. This is the strongest use of it and the least common.
  • A thank you. To someone who did something they did not have to. The hand-made part is the message: this took time.

What it actually is

A single handmade chenille flower, about 22cm tall, mounted on a card with a ribbon and a gift tag. Sunflower, purple tulip or white tulip. It does not need water and it does not wilt, so it can sit in a postbox, a hostel reception or an office pigeonhole for a week and be fine.

₹399. Made to order in 2–3 days, then 1–2 days across Delhi NCR or 3–5 anywhere else in India. Flat ₹49 shipping.

One thing not to do

Do not send this for a condolence in place of showing up if you can show up. Nothing posted is a substitute for a person in a room. Send it when the alternative is nothing — which, most of the time, is exactly what the alternative is.
