what to carry when the outfit has no pockets

A lehenga has no pockets. A saree has no pockets. An Indian wedding function runs about eleven hours, and for all eleven of them you are carrying a phone, a lipstick and the car key in one hand, or you have handed them to your mother, who did not agree to this. A small bag for an Indian wedding function is not an accessory problem. It is a logistics problem that happens to be photographed all evening.

What actually has to fit

Less than people think, and it is worth being honest about the list before shopping for something to hold it:

• A phone. The whole reason. Every group photo, every “where are you” message.
• A lipstick. One. It gets reapplied after eating and that is the end of it.
• Cards or cash, folded, and usually a car key.

That is the real inventory. Anything sized much beyond it is being carried for its own sake, and by the third function you have stopped carrying it at all.

The four options, and what is wrong with each

The clutch. Holds the list, looks correct, and occupies one entire hand for eleven hours. You cannot eat, greet anyone properly or hold a plate. It ends up on a chair, and then the chair moves.

The potli. The traditional answer, and a good one — a drawstring, a wrist loop, a hand free. The difficulty is that a potli is matched to an outfit, so it is bought per function, and three functions is three potlis that never appear again.

The sling. Practical, hands genuinely free, and the strap cuts a diagonal line straight across the embroidery on the outfit you chose for the embroidery. This is the trade-off nobody mentions until the photographs come back.

A top-handle bag small enough to be jewellery. Sits over the wrist or hooks over two fingers, holds the list, and reads as part of the outfit rather than luggage attached to it. This is the category the piece below belongs to.

What we make

The sunshine bloom handbag, ₹1,499. A sunflower about 20cm across, built as a structured body in handmade chenille, carried by a string of pearl beads. It opens at the top — the bloom parts to reach inside — and it takes a phone, cards and a lipstick. There are two red chenille cherries on a green stem at the side.

Being handmade to order is what makes it work for a wedding rather than in spite of it. Three things change on request at no extra cost:

• The bloom size — smaller for a slighter frame, larger if it is meant to be the thing people notice.
• The handle length — hand-held as photographed, or long enough to sit on the shoulder and leave both hands free for the ceremony.
• The cherries — swapped for something else on the side, in a colour taken off the lehenga rather than off a screen.

Why a flower instead of fabric

A fabric potli is matched to one outfit. A flower is matched to an occasion, which is a much wider net — the same bag works at the mehendi, at the sangeet and at a friend’s wedding eight months later.

It is also chenille, which is to say wire and soft fibre, so it does not wilt, does not need water and does not have a shelf life. Fresh flowers pinned to a bag are a five-hour decision. This one is still in the cupboard next season, which is the same argument the rest of what we make rests on.

The practical version: it travels. A destination wedding, a suitcase, three flights — the wire core means a petal that gets pressed flat opens back out with your fingers.

Ordering around a wedding date

Everything is made to order, so the date is the thing to plan backwards from.

• Delhi NCR — 2–3 days to make, 1–2 days to arrive. Order about five days out.
• Rest of India — 2–3 days to make, 3–5 days to arrive. Order about eight days out.
