Sending flowers to someone with hay fever is a lovely gesture and a small act of war. They will thank you, put them in the far room, and open a window.

Handmade chenille flowers have no pollen, no sap and no scent — they are wire and yarn — which removes the three things in a bouquet that a sensitive person reacts to. That is a genuinely useful property and it is worth being precise about what it does and does not fix.

What it solves

• Pollen. There is none, because there is no plant. Lilies, sunflowers and chrysanthemums are the usual offenders in a mixed bouquet and all three are available here as yarn instead.
• Scent. Nothing is perfumed. For anyone who gets a headache from stargazer lilies in a small flat, this is the whole problem gone.
• Sap and skin contact. No stems to cut, no leaves to strip, no sap on anyone’s hands.

What it does not solve

Dust. Any textile object in an Indian city collects dust, and dust matters to exactly the same people pollen matters to. This is the honest caveat and it has an easy fix: once a month, a hairdryer on cool from about a foot away, or a soft dry brush. Do not wash them and do not use a damp cloth — the wire core is steel.
