roses, lilies or tulips: picking flowers for someone else

What follows is what each one actually says to the person opening it. Not the Victorian flower-language nonsense — the ordinary modern reading, which is the one that will happen.

Roses

Red roses mean one thing and cannot be made to mean anything else. Do not send them to a colleague, a cousin or a friend you are trying to keep as one. Send them when the message is the message.

Blush roses with a lily is the same flower with the volume down. Warm, affectionate, not a declaration. This is the safest thing on the list and it is safe without being boring, which is a rare combination.

Lilies

Stargazer lily is the dramatic one — big, speckled, unmistakable across a room. It reads as generous. It is what to send when the occasion is genuinely large and you want the object to match.

Yellow lilies with a white tulip is the friendship arrangement. Yellow is cheerful without romance, which makes it right for a colleague, a new baby, a recovery, a congratulations.

Pink lilies with a tulip is the one people pick for a mother. It is soft and it photographs well, which matters more than anyone admits.

One practical note: real lilies are toxic to cats — every part of them, pollen included. Ours are wire and yarn, so a lily arrangement is one of the few that can go into a house with a cat in it without a phone call to a vet.

Tulips

White tulips are the design choice. In a flat that is all white walls, pale wood and brass, this is the arrangement that looks like it was chosen by someone with taste rather than someone in a hurry.

Purple tulips with a lily is the least common and the most likely to be remembered. Purple is what people pick when they want to avoid every default.

Sunflowers and daisies

The loudest and the most cheerful. Nobody has ever been sad to receive a sunflower. It is the right answer for a birthday, a new job, a housewarming and for anyone under thirty, and it is the single most requested combination we make.

How to actually choose

• What colour is their house? A gift that clashes gets moved to a back room. Whites and creams live anywhere.
• What is the relationship? Red roses have exactly one setting. Everything else is adjustable.
• Will it be photographed? If it is going on a story, stargazer or sunflower.
• When in doubt — blush roses with a lily. It has never been wrong.
