What the stage does to fresh flowers

• Lights. A par can at close range is hot and dry. Jasmine browns at the edges within the hour.
• Sweat and oil. Hair oil plus perspiration marks white flowers first and worst.
• Movement. Adavus are percussive. Anything held by grip rather than tied works loose.
• Photographs at the end. The formal pictures happen last, when a fresh gajra is at its worst.

What to look for instead

Light. Weight is what works a piece loose during fast head movement. Wire and pile weigh almost nothing.

Tied, not clipped. For a full performance, a garland tied around the bun beats any pin. Use pins only for a fixed, pinned-up style.

Colour-matched to the costume, not to a photo of a costume. Send a fabric photo — silk reads differently under stage light than it does in daylight.

Made early. This is the real advantage. A handmade piece can exist three months before the performance, be tried on at rehearsal, and adjusted.

For a whole class or a group item

Eight dancers in matching flowers reads as a decision from the third row; eight approximately-similar ones read as an accident. Sets of ten or more take about a week, more than twenty-five two to three weeks, and the colour is matched once and repeated across all of them.
