Every part of a true lily is poisonous to a cat — petals, leaves, stem, pollen, and the water in the vase. The ASPCA’s animal poison control guidance is unambiguous about it: a cat that grooms lily pollen off its own fur can go into acute kidney failure, and the amount required is tiny.

Most people find this out from a vet, at eleven at night, having been given a beautiful bouquet by somebody who meant well.

What is actually dangerous

• Lilies — the serious one. Lilium and daylilies (Hemerocallis) cause kidney injury in cats. Stargazer, Asiatic, Oriental, Easter and tiger lilies are all on that list. Dogs get gastrointestinal upset rather than kidney failure, which is bad but not the same category.
• Tulip and hyacinth bulbs — the bulb is the toxic part, so a bouquet is a smaller risk than a pot.
• Daffodils and narcissus.
• Chrysanthemums — mild, but they are in most mixed bouquets.
• Azalea and oleander — as houseplants, seriously toxic.

If your animal has eaten any of the above, that is a vet call now, not a wait-and-see.

Fresh flowers that are broadly fine

Roses (mind the thorns), sunflowers, gerberas, orchids, snapdragons and freesia are all on the non-toxic lists. The catch is that a mixed bouquet from a florist is rarely one species, and the filler greenery is almost never labelled.

Where handmade flowers come in

Ours are not flowers at all. They are steel wire wrapped in polyester pile — the material sold in craft shops as pipe cleaners — twisted into the shape of a flower by hand. There is no pollen, no sap, no bulb and no vase water, so the entire toxicity question does not apply.

A cat can sit next to one all day. Ours frequently do, judging by the photos customers send.

Being honest about the limits

Non-toxic is not the same as indestructible, and we would rather say so:

• It is not a chew toy. A dog that eats things should not be left alone with one. Swallowed fibre and a length of thin wire are a real hazard even though neither is poisonous.
• The lit pieces contain batteries. The moon bouquet and the lotus run on cells. Button batteries are dangerous to animals and to small children — keep the battery pack behind or under, not loose on the floor.
• A determined cat will still knock it over. Nothing solves that. At least this one does not spill water on the table.
